Cal U claims PSAC Championship

GREENSBURG, Pa. (Nov. 16) – The Vulcans captured the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship with a 3-0 win (25-18, 25-20, 25-18) against Seton Hill in the finals of the league tournament on Sunday afternoon.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 28-8 overall and earned the league's automatic qualifier for the 2014 NCAA Tournament. The Vulcans have now captured eight league championships in program history, including six titles in the last 10 years. Cal U will learn its seed later tonight when the NCAA releases the field for the NCAA Tournament via a webstream at 10 p.m. EST.

Senior outside hitter Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) led the team with 17 kills on a .350 hitting percentage. She also finished with five digs, two blocks and one service ace in the victory. Following the match, Miller was tabbed the PSAC Championships MVP after totaling 34 kills and 17 digs over the last two days.

Junior Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) finished with 11 kills while hitting at a .286 clip and freshman Ashley Leto (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) added 10 kills in the victory. Sophomore Megan Litoborski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) guided the offense with 42 assists and recorded her 14th assist/dig double-double of the year after establishing a career high and leading all players with 20 digs.

In addition to Litoborski, senior libero Samantha Rudy (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) totaled 19 digs and Leto collected 13 digs on Sunday. The quartet of junior Miranda Fouzie (Kingston, Ontario/Sydenham), sophomore Danielle Hayes (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Leto and Miller registered a pair of block assists against the Griffins.

Seton Hill won four-straight points in the opening set to a 6-3 lead before Cal U later claimed four of five points to take a 10-9 lead on a ball handling error. The Griffins countered by earning three of the next four points before the Vulcans rallied off six-straight points to take a 17-12 lead on a service ace by Litoborski. Seton Hill won three-straight points to cut the deficit to 17-15 before Cal U mounted a 7-2 run to take a 24-17 lead on an attacking error. After a block assist by the Griffins, the Vulcans earned a 25-18 victory in the first set with a kill by Hayes.

In the second set, Cal U raced out to a 10-3 lead on a kill by Leto before Seton Hill won four of six points to trim the deficit to 12-7. The Vulcans claimed six of the next seven points to take an 18-7 lead following back-to-back kills by Miller before the Griffins called a timeout. Seton Hill later posted five-straight points to cut the deficit to 22-16 before the teams traded the next three points. The Griffins staved off set point three times before the Vulcans posted a 25-20 win with another kill by Hayes.

The Vulcans won four-straight points early in the third set to take an 8-4 lead and later claimed three of four points to take an 11-6 lead on a kill by Miller. Seton Hill countered with three-straight points before Cal U mounted a 7-2 run following a timeout to take an 18-11 lead on an attacking error. The Griffins rallied for five-consecutive points to trim the deficit to 18-16 before the Vulcans answered with a 5-1 run to take a 23-17 lead on a block assist by Hayes and Leto. Following a Seton Hill point, Cal U closed the match with back-to-back kills by Leto and Miller to earn a 25-18 victory and the conference title.

Cal U has been featured in each of the NCAA Atlantic regional rankings this fall, sitting fifth in each of the last two weeks. The Vulcans posted road victories over two of the top-three teams in the latest regional rankings this week in the PSAC Tournament.
