Kiefer Shaw (Westmount, Quebec/Centennial) and senior
Jesse Burrell (Perth, Australia/Presbyterian Ladies' College) both qualified for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Championships after winning flights at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships on Monday.
Shaw and Burrell qualified for the national tournament after winning the doubles title at the regional event, while Shaw claimed the singles crown on the final day of the tournament. The Vulcans won both the singles and doubles regional titles for the ninth-straight season. The ITA National Championships will be played in Sumter, South Carolina, from Oct. 9-12.
In singles play, Shaw earned the title with a perfect 6-0 record after defeating teammate
Ramona Czakon in the championship match on Monday. She posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Devon Hubbard of host Mercyhurst in the opening round before claiming a 6-2, 6-2 win over Carla Corrochano in the second round. After another straight-set win in the third round, Shaw recorded a 6-3, 6-2 victory against fourth-seeded Lauren Howard of West Liberty in the quarterfinals. The reigning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Freshman of the Year then collected a 6-2, 6-4 win in the semifinals over unseeded Adrianna Jeffress of Mercyhurst.
Czakon entered play as the third seed and finished the tournament with a 5-1 mark. She outlasted Sarah Baich by a 1-6, 6-0, 10-6 margin in the third round before defeating teammate
Veronika Mikulis (Otterburn Park, Quebec/Heritage Regional) in the quarterfinals. Czakon claimed a 6-4, 6-7, 10-5 victory in the semifinals against top-seeded Saioa Gomez of Mercyhurst, who captured the singles title at last week's PSAC Individual Championships.
Mikulis posted a 3-1 mark at the tournament hosted at the Pennbriar Athletic Club after opening play unseeded. Freshman
Lena Dimmer (Wallendorf-Pont, Luxembourg/Lycée Classique) also collected a pair of victories over the weekend.
In doubles action, Shaw and Burrell earned the title with a 4-0 mark after defeating teammates Czakon and senior
Lucie Rey (Geneva, Switzerland/Colombieres) in the championship match. Shaw and Burrell also defeated teammates
Mariela Sarinana (Mexico City, Mexico/Miraflores) and Dimmer by a 9-7 count in the semifinals.
Czakon and Rey, the second seed in the tournament, posted three wins and advanced to the finals with an 8-4 victory over the doubles team from Charleston in the semifinals. Sarinana and Dimmer also tallied three victories at the weekend event.
The Vulcans are idle for almost two weeks before playing four dual matches at Roadman Park from Oct. 3-4.
