Women's Soccer advances to semifinals, 1-0

CALIFORNIA (Nov. 1) – Freshman Janelle McCann (Burlington, Vt./Tilton School) recorded her seventh goal of the season on Thursday afternoon, as the No. 16 California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory against IUP in the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament.

With the win, the top-seeded Vulcans improve to 15-3-1 this season and secure hosting rights for the remainder of the tournament. Cal U, who won its first league championship in 2011, has advanced to the semifinals of the PSAC Tournament in each of the past four years. The Vulcans continue play in the tournament on Saturday, Nov. 3, when they face fourth-seeded Edinboro at 11 a.m.

McCann scored the only goal of the game off a corner kick from sophomore Jordan Gray (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair Secondary) at the 24:18-mark.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Magruda (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) earned her eighth shutout of the season after making two saves. IUP junior Mara Hricik finished with eight saves in the losing effort.

Cal U out-shot IUP by a 17-4 margin after limiting the Crimson Hawks to only two shot attempts each period. The Crimson Hawks held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

IUP finishes the year with a 9-6-4 overall record after making its ninth-straight appearance in the post-season.
