Vulcans down Edinboro, advance to finals

CALIFORNIA (Nov. 3) – Sophomore Erin Hogan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) scored the game-winning goal in the 84th minute, as the No. 16 California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team recorded a 2-1 win over Edinboro in the semifinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 16-3-1 this season and advance to the league title game for the third-consecutive season. Cal U will host Slippery Rock tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 4, in the title game at 12 p.m. The Rock advanced to the championship by earning a 3-0 win against East Stroudsburg.

Edinboro took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when Karisa Fernandez scored her 10th goal of the year after her shot was tipped by the goalkeeper. The Vulcans tied the game at the 21:17-mark when senior Kayla Fransko (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) scored an unassisted goal after her corner kick deflected off the crossbar. Cal U claimed a 2-1 lead in the 84th minute when Hogan collected her fourth goal of the year off a feed from junior Kelsey Russo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel).

Sophomore Ashley Magruda (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) collected six saves in 90 minutes of action. Edinboro sophomore Meghan Kelly finished with two saves in the losing effort.

Both teams finished the game with 14 shot attempts and the Vulcans held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.

With the loss, Edinboro falls to 13-4-2 after advancing to the semifinals of the PSAC Tournament for the third time in school history.
