Tennis advances past Millersville, 5-0

INDIANA, Pa. (April 19) – The No. 16 California University of Pennsylvania tennis team claimed a 5-0 victory against Millersville in the semifinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament on Friday morning.

With the win, the Vulcans extend their season-best win streak to four matches and improve to 13-9 this season. Cal U, who has won six-consecutive league titles, will face the winner of IUP-Kutztown in the PSAC Championship on Sunday, April 21, at 11 a.m. (new time). Meanwhile, the Marauders finish the year with an 8-12 record after posting their first win in the league tournament in a decade.

Cal U took an early 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles play for the eighth time this spring. The No. 21 tandem of freshman Alexandra Borgenhoff (Alingsas, Sweden/Katrinelund) and sophomore Ramona Czakon opened the session with an 8-0 victory at the second position against Elizabeth Wagner and Tori Davis. Senior Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa/British International Distance) and freshman Maxime Colen (Breda, Netherlands/Newman) then blanked Nicole Daacke and Alexandra Heller by an 8-0 count at third doubles. The No. 13 duo of junior Lucie Sipkova (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Pardubice Mozartova) and sophomore Lucie Rey (Geneva, Switzerland/Colombieres) extended its win streak to seven matches with an 8-1 victory at the first slot over Melissa Plowman and Kelsey Waite.

The Vulcans then clinched the match victory with a pair of wins in singles play, while also holding the lead in the remaining four unfinished singles matches. Borgenhoff cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win against Wagner at the third position, marking her team-best 27th singles victory this year. Rey secured the match win by recording a 6-0, 6-0 victory at fourth singles over Daacke.

Cal U will be making its eighth-consecutive appearance in the PSAC Championship on Sunday. The Vulcans have defeated IUP in each of the last two title matches.
