Box Score

QUAKERTOWN, Pa. (May 2) – The No. 12 California University of Pennsylvania softball team had its 28-game winning streak snapped, as Shippensburg powered its way to a 3-1 win in the PSAC Tournament Friday evening at Veterans Park.

The loss drops the Vulcans (32-5) into the loser's bracket final where they will meet IUP for a berth into the PSAC Championship to take on Shippensburg (34-13). IUP advanced with a 7-5 walk-off win over West Chester behind a three-run, walk-off home run with two outs in the loser's bracket semifinal late Friday night.

Cal U jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Junior shortstop Breanna Morris (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) led the frame off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, junior center fielder Shelby Heyd (Innisfil, Ontario/Nantyr Shores Secondary) delivered a two-out RBI single to score Morris and give the Vulcans a 1-0 lead.

After a scoreless third, the Raiders connected for back-to-back solo home runs with two outs to take a 2-1 lead after four innings. Shippensburg added a third solo home run in the seventh to secure the victory and advance to the PSAC Championship.

Raider pitcher Emily Estep (23-2) settled in after allowing the run in the second inning. She limited the Vulcans to one run (earned) on four hits and struck out seven batters to earn the complete-game win. After the second-inning run, she scattered just two hits over the final five innings. Cal U sophomore Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) was saddled with the loss. Sagl (20-3) tossed 6.0 innings and gave up three hits (all solo home runs), while striking out six.

Cal U was held to less than five hits for the first time since March 14 and the loss also snaps a 28-game winning streak that dates back to March 15.

The Vulcans will look to rebound tomorrow, Saturday, May 4, when they face IUP in an elimination game at 11 a.m. The winner will then face Shippensburg at 1:30 p.m.
