Vulcans eliminated by Slippery Rock, 1-0

Rock scores game-winning goal in 82nd minute

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (Nov. 3) – After clinching their fourth post-season berth in five years, the Vulcans suffered a 1-0 loss at Slippery Rock in the first round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament on Tuesday night.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team finishes its season with a 9-7-1 overall record. The Vulcans were the fifth seed in the PSAC Tournament after winning their last three games of the regular season. Meanwhile, the fourth-seeded Slippery Rock improves to 12-6-0 on the year and advances to face host and top-seeded Mercyhurst in the semifinals of the league tournament.

The first half held little action with the two teams combining for only four shots, including three from Slippery Rock. Cal U recorded its first shot in the 31st minute of the game.

Early in the second half, the Vulcans had their first scoring chance of the game when a shot from junior Elliot Taylor (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) was knocked away by a defender at the 48:42-mark. Slippery Rock scored the eventual game-winning goal after Stephen McConahy sent a cross into the box to the foot of Matt Sangermano in the 82nd minute. Cal U had its best chance minutes after the goal when a cross from senior Lubos Kubik (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Roosevelt) found freshman Eric Campbell (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek), who had a header deflected away by a defender.

Freshman goalkeeper Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium) totaled three saves while playing all 90 minutes in the loss.

The Vulcans held a 13-7 advantage in shots, including 12 in the second half, and also posted a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
