A former four-year starter for the Vulcans and a veteran offensive coordinator at the NCAA FCS level, Gary Dunn enters his 11th season as head coach at California (PA) in 2026.

Dunn has established himself as one of the winningest coaches in program history, ranking second all-time in school history with 75 victories at his alma mater. He holds a 75-28 overall record at Cal, including a 51-14 mark in PSAC West play.

Under Dunn, the Vulcans have made four appearances in the NCAA Playoffs while posting at least seven victories in eight seasons. The program has featured seven AFCA All-Americans, four regional finalists for the Harlon Hill Trophy and eight major PSAC postseason award winners. Cal has also produced 96 All-PSAC West selections during Dunn's tenure, including 54 first-team honorees.

The Vulcans enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in program history in 2024, finishing 10-3 overall after posting an undefeated record in PSAC West play and advancing to the Super Region One Championship for the second time under Dunn. He was selected PSAC West Coach of the Year for the first time in his career, while Cal climbed as high as No. 7 in the AFCA Top 25 poll and finished No. 12 nationally.

Cal continued its success last year, finishing 9-4 overall and earning an at-large berth in the NCAA Playoffs for a consecutive season. The Vulcans advanced to the second round of the playoffs and finished No. 22 in the final AFCA Top 25 poll after facing five nationally-ranked opponents.
In 2021, Cal opened the season with eight-consecutive victories and finished 9-1 overall while reaching as high as No. 3 in the AFCA Top 25 poll. Defensive back Jermal Martin Jr. earned All-America recognition from five organizations and was selected Super Region One Defensive Player of the Year and PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Year, while quarterback Noah Mitchell earned PSAC West Offensive Athlete of the Year honors.

Two years earlier, the Vulcans led NCAA Division II in rushing defense after allowing just 56.5 yards per game and tied for third nationally with a plus-16 turnover margin. Cal also produced a school-record 19 All-PSAC West selections in 2016 when the Vulcans posted an undefeated regular season, captured the PSAC Championship and advanced to the regional championship of the NCAA Playoffs. Dunn was named AFCA Super Region One Coach of the Year after leading Cal to an 11-1 record and four victories over nationally-ranked opponents.

In addition to success on the field, Dunn's teams have excelled academically. Since his arrival, Cal has featured eight Academic All-Americans, eight semifinalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy and 35 members of the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society.

Dunn previously spent six seasons as the offensive coordinator at nearby Duquesne following a 13-year stint at Morehead State (Ky.), where he spent his final 11 seasons as offensive coordinator. During his time with the Dukes, Dunn helped the program post five winning seasons, capture at least a share of three Northeast Conference championships and make its first NCAA FCS Playoff appearance in 2015. He mentored 26 All-NEC selections, including three-time honoree Larry McCoy, who finished his career as Duquesne's all-time leading rusher.

At Morehead State, Dunn served as offensive coordinator for 11 seasons after spending two years as the Eagles' offensive line and tight ends coach. In 2000, Morehead State led the FCS in scoring and total offense, while the Eagles matched the winningest season in school history in 2002 with a 9-3 record.

A four-year starter on the offensive line for the Vulcans from 1991-94, Dunn earned First-Team All-PSAC West honors at center as a senior and served as a team captain. He began his coaching career at Cal as a graduate assistant before spending two seasons working with the offensive line and tight ends.

A native of Pittsburgh, Dunn earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Cal in 1995 and completed his master's degree in geography and regional planning in 1997. He and his wife, Melissa, reside in Coal Center, Pennsylvania, with their daughter, Sydney - a college freshman.
